Get an early start to a healthier heart.

You’re never too young to start paying attention to your heart health. Follow this age-by-age guide to help keep your heart in tip-top shape.*

Things to do in your 20s:

Eat to beat heart disease. It should be no surprise that your heart is healthiest when you eat healthy foods. Include whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and healthy fats, such as olive oil and avocado, in your everyday routine.

Things to do in your 30s:

Know your numbers. Get your cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar tested, and keep track of your body mass index (BMI). Do this at your annual check-up to have a baseline to follow for life.

Things to do in your 40s:

Walk. Then walk some more. Walking is one of the best things you can do for your heart health. Walking with music or with a friend can make it fun. For increased mindfulness, start by taking a “silent walk” at least once a week.

Heart attack symptoms in women

Women are less likely than men to experience the classic symptoms of a heart attack. They’re also less likely to see a doctor if they experience symptoms.**

Chest pain does still occur in women having a heart attack, but “it’s usually not the most severe symptom,” says Mayo Clinic cardiologist Dr. Rekha Mankad.** Here are the heart attack symptoms that are more typical for women:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea
  • A powerful feeling of fatigue or unease
  • Pain between your shoulder blades
  • Pain going into your back or up into your neck and jaw

Dr. Mankad also points out that women are quick to address their partner’s symptoms, but when their own health is at stake, they’re putting it “on the end of a to-do list. Never ignore your symptoms.”

If you think you may be having a heart attack, immediately call 9-1-1.

Make a habit of living healthier.

Working a few small, positive steps into your day can help you build healthier habits for life.
